Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work

Before commencing gardening or maintenance work, we will assess the risks associated with the specific site and tasks. This may include, but is not limited to, risks from uneven ground, working at height, use of machinery, exposure to chemicals, manual handling, weather conditions, wildlife, and interaction with the public.

Where significant risks are identified, we will implement appropriate control measures and safe systems of work. Use of Tools, Machinery, and Equipment

We will ensure that all tools, plant, and machinery used in our gardening and landscaping services are suitable for their intended purpose, regularly inspected, and properly maintained. Faulty or damaged equipment will be removed from service immediately until repaired or replaced.

Only trained and authorised personnel are permitted to operate powered machinery such as mowers, hedge trimmers, blowers, and shredders. Personal Protective Equipment

Where fertilisers, pesticides, or other horticultural chemicals are used, they will be stored, handled, and applied in accordance with product instructions and relevant regulations. Only competent personnel who have received appropriate training may handle or apply such substances.

We will take care to minimise exposure to harmful substances for both workers and the public, including careful timing of applications and clear communication where needed. Green waste, soil, and other materials will be handled using safe manual handling techniques or appropriate mechanical aids to reduce the risk of injury.

Working Environment and Public Safety

We will plan and organise our gardening work to minimise disruption and risk to clients, neighbours, and members of the public. This includes maintaining tidy work areas, securing tools and equipment when not in use, and clearly indicating any temporary hazards such as open excavations or slippery surfaces.

Where work takes place near roads, paths, or shared outdoor spaces, we will implement suitable traffic and pedestrian management controls proportionate to the risks present. Our aim is to ensure that people can move safely in and around our work sites.

Training, Information, and Supervision

Gardeners Botany Bay will provide appropriate health and safety training, instruction, and supervision to all employees. This includes induction training for new starters, task specific instruction, refreshers where necessary, and additional training when new equipment or methods are introduced.

Employees will be encouraged to raise health and safety concerns openly, to contribute suggestions for improvement, and to participate fully in the safe planning of work. Supervisors will monitor the effectiveness of training through observation and feedback.
